[OFF] All is fair in the coaching business?

A funny thing happened on the way to the Wattage group this morning.

After reading one of my Wattage list posts, someone got interested in my
approach to training and Googled me.

To his (and now, my) great surprise: "Phil Skiba" has apparently been
added to Google as a keyword for the Peaks Coaching Group! I took a
screenshot because I could not believe my eyes. It is attached here.

I would not post this to the list, however, it was found through the
list and I want to make the facts clear for anyone else reading. I am
not a member of the Peaks Coaching Group, I don't endorse the members of
that group, the company itself, or any of their products, services, or
technology. I have no affiliation whatsoever with them.

Perhaps Hunter and his colleagues would like to fix this little problem.
I'm sure they will be shocked, SHOCKED! to learn this, just as I was.

I just started reading the wattage forums, and wonder what all the
animosity is about. This post exemplifies what I have seen in several
threads that I have read to try to get up to speed on power training
and analysis. There is a lot of sarcasm and sniping here. I thought
this was an "intellectual" forum? Regards, Mark Manner

Hey Phil,

I'd take this as a form of flattery. What you show is a paid search
result, and a method where you can list a string of keywords and that
keyword will be inserted in the title of your ad...sort of like when
you google "bunny slippers" and an ad pops up that says "buy bunny
slippers on ebay"

The point is...they must respect (or fear) you, your training systems
and your software enough to want to intercept people searching for
coaching and software...and are willing to pay for it. However the ad
as written is deceiving and I'm certain that you can get google to
block this ad if Peaks Coaching Group does not remove it
themselves.

Is it flattering? Maybe not, but you don't see them spending money
buying Google Ads with MY name...

I'd argue that it doesn't really matter.

Providing training plans via the web -- regardless of the validity of
the science and analysis -- is not coaching. There are too many
coached riders who do not use power meters and who are consistently
outperforming riders who are training with power meters and using the
sort of analytical tools these devices have spawned than can readily
be attributed to random results.

Hmm, I'll bite. I guess I'm in a foul mood because its freezing here
in California (high of only 63 today).

"Providing training plans via the web is not coaching."

If Coaching is a method of directing, instructing and training a
person or group of people, with the aim to achieve some goal or
develop specific skills (Wikipedia's def) then buying a plan over the
web to improve IS a form of coaching (albeit a pre-packaged form). In
my experience coaching comes in many forms. Dismissing web-based
coaching because it doesn't serve a narrow definition of coaching does
a disservice to those that have seen results from various approaches
across the coaching spectrum.

"There are too many coached riders who do not use power meters and who
are consistently outperforming riders who are training with power
meters."

Really? I must have missed that study. Cna you send me a link? And why
is the non-PM w a coach group outperforming the PM group? Is it
superior coaching or is it genetics? It must be the PM that is to
blame for these athletes under-performing non-PM athletes.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make here or why you'd be
weighing in on a forum regarding training with power if that's the way
you feel. Just hire a great coach and the hell with measurement, eh?

Sorry for being an ar$e but I couldn't resist. God we need some 80
degree weather. ;-)

I'm closing this thread as the original post has nothing to do with
the purpose of this list and only seems to have gone downhill from
there.

If anyone has issues with other Wattage group members (or their
businesses), please deal with them offline.

Thank you,
