Discussion:
Is mountainbiking good for building base?

Hi,

I was riding my mountainbike very often lately and I was wondering, if
this would built my FTP/Base?
I´d say the intensity is in the L3/SST range, but there are many
technical downhills and also short steep uphills. So it is rather
stochastik in terms of power I guess.
So, is this good for building my base, or is this more of a anaerobic
to VO2max workout?

In brief: Yes. Absolutely yes. To paraphrase from Fletch, "its all
TSS these days"

What I mean is that you acheive a TSS for each mtb ride and that
contributes towards raising your CTL.

One thing though about mtb power metrics: they are surprisingly lower
that road power metrics.

and the million dollar question is: is the training effect
proportionately lower?

I use my MTB for active recovery, after an hour ride I feel refreshed,
even though I try to keep a decent effort. Maybe my technical skills
suck so much that I just can't push hard enough

Not enough in my opinion to avoid adding a little fun & diversity to
your base/TSS/CTL

So building base is possible.
Next question, is it also rising my FTP?
That the power numbers are lower could be possible because you can´t
push that steady, but on the other hand I´m more motivated to push
hard because otherwise I would simply fall. (It´s very hilly here and
the ascends are ostly very steep.)
I don´t have a powermeter on my mtb, so I can´t tell which numbers I´m
generating on it.

'base' is FTP

IMHO :-)

But base is also CTL, how then could it be FTP? That would mean FTP is
kind of CTL?

CTL is a way to measure training load, the ultimate goal is to build
FTP (actually to win races is the ultimate goal but you know what I
mean)

focusing in increasing CTL without considering if that is pushing up
your FTP leads you nowhere
